KEPK is an independent multi level creative space in Meanjin (Brisbane) which comprises an art gallery, imaging studio, artist studios, and event space. Our focus is to provide a temporal housing for experimental creative projects. Our collective intention is to enable other creative practitioners.

KEPK was formed in 2020 by Joseph Burgess, Melina Celik, Thomas Oliver, Fausto Vergara and Gabrielle Wilton. Since 2023, KEPK is run voluntarily by Melina and Joseph.

KEPK can be pronounced however you imagine it.

Mélina Anouche Celik (she/her)

Mélina is an evolutionary biologist working on living and extinct mammals. Her work involves 3D tools to study how shape changes between species over time and space. She also works with clay, and finds harmony in shaping dirt. One of her special talents is letting things rot.

Joseph Burgess (he/him)

Joseph is an artist born in Portland Oregon, currently living and working in Brisbane, Australia. Their multidisciplinary practice includes sound engineering, large scale fabrication, and interactive media. Burgess operates as Unregistered Master Builder as a way to encompass the plurality of their skills, experience, and creative output. Joseph has developed large scale public projects and installations for Vivid, Curiocity and Woodford Folk Festival. Most recently 14 large scale interactive instruments for Harps of the City in 2019. Joseph freelances as a technical producer. 

 

Joseph’s practice explores the moving image through time-based public art installations and performance with a focus on progressing the role of film and animation in spatial contexts. While living abroad for most of the last decade Joseph has built a body of work investigating evolutionary biology through animation in urban spaces. He has presented these works at  CAVEPS 2015 (Conference of Vertebrate Palaeontology Systematics and Evolution) as well as SVP 2019 (Society of Vertebrate Palaeontology). These works have been screened internationally at Oregon Cinema Arts Film Festival and Miami Independent Film Festival.
